‘Aloha shirt’ a poor fit for Japan’s super cool biz summer

Aloha shirt a poor fit for Japans super cool biz summer

Environment Ministry officials don Hawaiian shirts, known as Aloha shirts, on June 1 as a move to promote the “super cool biz” look, part of efforts to save power. as part of the power-saving campaigns following the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, with air conditioners turned up to save energy, the comfortable Hawaiian shirt seems to be a natural fit for Japan’s “super cool biz” campaign.

however, outside of the Ministry of the Environment, which is allowing employees to wear aloha shirts, along with polo shirts, there remains a deep-rooted aversion to government employees dressed in Hawaiian shirts, commonly referred to as “aloha shirts” in Japan.

That’s ironic, because the aloha shirt has its origin in clothing manufactured by Japanese immigrants, said Ryoichi Kobayashi, president of Toyo Enterprise co., and holder of the “aloha shirt” registered trademark in Japan.

“The traditional ‘yuzen’ dyers in Kyoto printed patterns on fabrics and exported them to Hawaii through Japanese immigrants,” he said. “The shirt was thus born out of Japanese technology.”

Starting in the early 1960s, both the public and private sectors in Hawaii, all the way up to the state governor, fielded campaigns to push for the aloha shirt to achieve the status of “formal wear” in Hawaii and to make its manufacturing a state industry.

Aloha shirts thus have close ties with Japan, but when postwar Japan began to “reimport” them from the United States, wearing one was seen as embodying the war conquerer’s nation.

In 1948, “Kikyo” (Repatriation), Jiro Osaragi’s novel that was printed as a serial in the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, a character says: “The same people that competed to wear state-designated uniforms are now changing into aloha shirts. … they are a perfect example of a stateless people.”

Osaragi was far from the only intellectual of the time who deplored the abandoning of their nationality by war-defeated Japanese.

according to sociologist Koji Nanba, author of “Yankee Shinka-ron” (Treatise on the evolution of delinquents), “The Season of the Sun” (1956) is among the earliest films that featured aloha shirts. the film’s popularity helped to spread the image across Japan of aloha shirts being the shirt of choice of young male delinquents, Nanba said.

In the 1973 film “Battles without Honor and Humanity: Deadly Fight in Hiroshima,” set in 1950, a junior gangster played by Sonny Chiba wears super-gaudy aloha shirts and defies the establishment.

“We were born to enjoy delicious meals and sleep with beautiful girls, weren’t we?” he said.

In the second half of the 1970s, aloha shirts became popular among motorcycle gangs, which were experiencing a boom.

“There was no wonder that motorcycle gangs got to wear them, because they descended from the genealogy of delinquents’ fashion,” Nanba said. “Dressing light is dangerous for motorcycle riders because of what would happen if they crashed, but they were probably showing off the frenzy in which they were spinning around.”

This summer, the Ministry of the Environment, touting “super cool biz” to save on power, allowed its own employees to work in polo shirts, patternless T-shirts or aloha shirts. one local government took it a step further and allowed its employees to work in “ultra cool biz,” including half pants.

In the meantime, other local governments continued with their ban on aloha shirts. It’s as if the aloha shirt will remain a symbol of defiance.

“The first wearers of aloha shirts are crucial, and this was the case with public servants in Hawaii,” Kobayashi said. “If the top brass wear them proudly, the rest will follow their example.”

George Tokoro, a Japanese actor and TV personality, said he has about 100 aloha shirts, but thinks it’s “out of the question” for them to be acceptable super cool biz wear.

“Power saving or whatever, public officials’ blurbs to do the ‘right thing’ are always out of tune,” he said. “Think about the heat and humidity of summer in Japan. Aloha shirts made of rayon are too stifling to wear. they don’t understand anything. the air in Hawaii is dry. Wind goes through them, and that’s why it’s so refreshing to wear one.”

Tokoro added that aloha shirts have gaudy colors and patterns, and “the shirt ends up wearing you, not the other way around.”

“An aloha shirt is definitely not for the company worker type who drives around in a hybrid electric car and takes his children to drive-in restaurants,” Tokoro said. “An aloha shirt only looks perfect on a guy who has the air of a tinkerer who is always working on his clunker of a car.”

New retailer CW Price rolls out two stores in the Syracuse market

New retailer CW Price rolls out two stores in the Syracuse marketDavid Lassman / The Post-StandardGrand opening of CW Price store at Shop City. Sales associate Ray Kizzee hands out gift cards to folks in the crowd as the opening was delayed due to computer problems.

Syracuse, NY — New discount retailer CW Price introduced itself to Central New York this morning, a little later than planned but to welcoming crowds hunting for door prizes and deals.

The New York City-based chain opened 47 stores in the Northeast this morning, including two in the Syracuse market: in Shop City shopping center in the Eastwood area and in Western Lights shopping center in Geddes.

A corporate-wide computer glitch kept the checkout registers offline until around 9:20 a.m., 20 minutes past the planned opening.

The company’s technical support staff in New York City made computer fixes by resending a software file, said Penny Montgomery, assistant manager at the CW Price store in Western Lights.

“We had pretty good lines waiting to get in” before the doors opened, Montgomery said. “People are excited about the opportunity to come and shop here.”

At the Shop City store, a crowd of dozens around 8:30 a.m. had swelled to more than 100 people at 9 a.m., and some grew impatient. fifteen people had been at the front doors of the store at 6 a.m., a shopper said. David Lassman / The Post-StandardGrand opening of CW Price store at Shop City. Shoppers enter the store just around 9:20 a.m., 20 minutes after the scheduled opening time.

But store employees managed to calm the crowd, work out the kinks and get the store open.

Angela Briguglia, who lives near Shop City, was first in the door of the new store, which is in the Tops supermarket end of the plaza.

“When A.J. Wright closed, that just made me sick,” said Briguglia. “I liked to come down here in the afternoons and shop when I have nothing to do.”

The CW Price stores opened in store fronts that were previously occupied by discounter A.J. Wright. That chain’s parent, TJX Cos., shuttered the A.J. Wright chain in February. TJX also owns the T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods chains.

CW Price is a division of Conway Stores inc., which has 50 discount stores under that name in the metropolitan New York City market.

Forty-seven CW Price stores were scheduled to open today, the first stores for the new chain, which sells discount fashion clothing for women, men and children. it also sells housewares and home goods.

At the Shop City store, Jerome Carter of Syracuse was happy that CW Price stepped into the void left by A.J. Wright, the retailer whose merchandising strategy CW Price mirrors.

“When A.J. Wright left, that was a bummer,” said Carter. “I had to ride out to Marshalls or J.C. Penney if I wanted a shirt and tie at a reasonable price. this is good for the neighborhood.”

Abercrombie & Fitch offers to pay 'Jersey Shore' star The Situation to stop wearing its clothes

Abercrombie & Fitch offers to pay 'Jersey Shore' star The Situation to stop wearing its clothes Ambercrombie & Fitch; Charles Sykes/AP Abercrombie & Fitch is offering cash to Mike (The Situation) Sorrentino to stop wearing its clothes. Take our Poll bad situation

What do you think of Abercrombie & Fitch’s request to The Situation?

Abercrombie & Fitch wants Mike (The Situation) Sorrentino to leave its clothes in his dirty laundry pile.

The neo-preppy retailer is offering to pay the “Jersey Shore” star not to wear its clothes because they’re afraid his buffoonish image is sullying its brand.

“We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino’s association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image,” the retailer said in a statement.

“We understand that the show is for entertainment purposes, but believe this association is contrary to the aspirational nature of our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans,” the statement said.

A&F said it offered Sorrentino “a substantial payment” to wear other brands, and also made the offer to the rest of the show’s cast.

Sorrentino wore a pair of bright green A&F sweatpants on episode 2 of the current ‘Jersey Shore’ season. (MTV)

There was no word whether The Sitch would ditch his Abercrombie gear, but the retailer said they were “urgently” awaiting a response.

A rep for Sorrentino denied the Daily News’ request for comment.

Despite A&F’s current concern, the company didn’t seem to mind the free press Sorrentino gave them last year when “Shore” was at the height of their popularity.

In an interview with New York Magazine last summer, the fist-pumping partier revealed the effect his nickname had on merchandise.

“The show went international, and I read that it’s very big overseas, especially ‘The Situation’ — my name, or my character — is known worldwide now,” he said. “Abercrombie & Fitch, their most popular shirt, they told me, is ‘Fitchuation.’ I mean, where did they get that from? obviously from myself.”

The MTV hit is currently in its fourth season, which is set in Florence, Italy. It’s premiere Aug. 4 episode set a ratings record for the network with 8.8 million viewers.

Steven Tyler, ‘American Idol’ Judges, Inspire Clothing Lines

Steven Tyler, American Idol Judges, Inspire Clothing Lines

“American Idol” judge Steven Tyler doesn’t just inspire “Idol” wannabes-apparently he inspires fashion designers as well!

according to Rolling Stone, Tyler’s bohemian style is the inspiration for a new “musical clothing line” called Andrew Charles.

the designer? none other than Andy Hilfiger (yes, he has a brother named Tommy). Hilfiger said the line, which will launch next month at Macy’s department stores, will be “very ’70s, very gypsy, very boho.” And very Steven Tyler.

the line will feature a denim-heavy mix of woven pieces, knits and outerwear, while a spinoff collection, Rock Scarf, will feature a variety of rocker-inspired scarves. (Although can anyone in the real world really rock a scarf the way Steven Tyler does?)

But the Aerosmith front man, who will be the official face for the new Andrew Charles line, isn’t the first “American Idol” alum to offer fashion inspiration to the masses.

First up, “Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez is about to join the ranks of Daisy Fuentes and Lauren Conrad with her new clothing line set to debut this fall at Kohl’s. O Magazine recently offered a sneak peek at the glam-casual line which features faux-fur jackets, wrap dresses, sequin tops and sparkly jewelry pieces. Best of all? just about every piece in J-Lo’s Kohl’s line is priced at under $100.

While J-Lo’s line is set to launch in the near future, back in 2005, “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest unveiled his own fashion line of t-shirts, tanks, and distressed polos under the JEM Sportswear label, the R Line. At the time, the always-stylish Seacrest gave a piece of fashion advice to his fans: “The combination of a blazer over any T-shirt with a pair of jeans is foolproof.” And he should know!

Also back in the day, former “Idol” judge and forever our girl, Paula Abdul, debuted her clothing line, Skirtz, in 2004. the colorful, dance-inspired clothing line for kids was sold at Walmart– and most pieces sold for under $10 each.

And while some of “American Idol” lifer Randy Jackson’s funky fashion selections are worthy of a clothing line, for now he’s sticking to above- the-neck style. But Jackson’s line of eyewear is indeed an eye-opener. his RJ Dawg line of eye glasses for men features “on trend shapes and colors.”

And finally, one “American Idol” alum that we’d love to see launch a clothing line? Former judge Simon Cowell. because no one can rock a plain white t-shirt like he does. Imagine the possibilities!

Kardashian crew launch label line

 Kardashian crew launch label line

The Kardashian sisters are very big stars and that star power was evident on the red carpet Wednesday night (August 17) at the launch party for their new clothing line, the ‘Kardashian Kollection.’

According to Reuters, Kim Kardashian generated the most attention, ahead of her upcoming wedding this weekend to NBA basketball star Kris Humphries, who seemed somewhat overwhelmed by it all.

Meanwhile, the reality TV stars were excited about the chance to push their new clothing line that is being sold exclusively through the Sears department stores.

‘I think by having three different designers design for one line, I think it does so much more for one line,’ explained Khloe.

‘I think it does so much more for the line because you are getting three different fashion senses. you are getting us designing for three different figures, personalities and taste. you are getting so much across the board. it is not all uniform, it varies so widely that you are getting so much in this one collection.’

‘I think also we wear the pieces so differently,’ added sister Kourtney. ‘I would not think to put this blazer over this dress and I don’t think Khloe or Kim would put this top with this skirt. I think we would each do it our own way. So, I think that makes it unique too.’

As for Saturday’s big day (August 20), Kim seemed to be the most calm about what’s being called the ‘Royal Reality’ wedding.

‘I said that I think that I am more nervous about the wedding than you guys,’ joked sister Kourtney.

Mom Kris Jenner, who’s been instrumental in guiding the career of her daughters, joked that she is just hoping to make it through the week.

‘We take it one day at a time, we are almost there,’ said Jenner.

‘So, everything is good and we have a lot of help and she is having a ball. So, that is all I care about is that she is happy.’

The wedding is set to take place in Montecito, California, with a reported guest list that is said to include Jay-z and Beyonce and Justin Bieber.

Petite Clothing

 Petite Clothing

If you are a petite woman it can sometimes be extremely difficult to purchase clothing that suits your frame, shape and height. So many stores accommodate for ‘leggy’ people. If you are 5’10 or above you will obviously not have a problem at all but for some sorter folk there is a huge issue. When falling in love with a pair of trouser you don’t want to be having to turn them up before you can wear them. Furthermore you cannot get a true indication of the fit and style of the product when they are so long for some petite people who also have a tiny frame there is the option of children’s or teenagers clothing but that isn’t what you would choose. you would not find something classic and sophisticated by shopping in the children’s section.

Over the last couple of years companies have started to take notice of this dilemma and have introduced purely petite shops dedicated to small woman. not only will the clothing accommodate your shape and be designed to flatter a small person but you will not have to turn up the trousers or sleeves

Although petite clothing ranges seem to be more expensive than other clothing it’s worth the extra money for the fit of the clothing. the material tends to be of better quality as well.

Carhartt Flame-Resistant Clothing Pants – The Industry Standard, But Always Changing

Carhartt Flame Resistant Clothing Pants The Industry Standard, But Always Changing

If you have ever worn Carhartt before you know the durability, quality and extended period of time that the garment will last with proper care of it. Since Carhartt has launched it’s first line a few years ago, they have taken quality product that people are use to and added a safety element in making its flame-resistant clothing line. their ways of discovering what the customer like and dislike has their catalog featuring new and different each spring and fall season. The Carhartt pocket t-shirt (K87) has been around for many years and although they aren’t getting rid of it, they’ve developed a lighter weight version (K284) for the warmer months of the year. their continuing to innovate and adapt to changing customer demands but lets explore where they could be headed next.

This spring Carhartt introduced quite a bit of new styles to their extensive line-up of flame-resistant pants. The new flame-resistant relaxed-fit jean (FRB100) is a lightweight pant for the slender worker who prefers denim pants. if you like more room in the seat and thigh of your pant, the flame-resistant twill work pant (FRB002) or the flame-resistant canvas cargo pant (FRB240) is what you need to be getting a pair of. Both of these pants offer a lightweight fabric which is more suitable for the warm summer months than your 13 or 14-oz pants. The canvas cargo pant also gives you a lot of storage space with the cargo pockets located on the outside of each leg. what could Carhartt possibly be missing? The answer is a double-front flame-resistant pant. Many workers enjoyed wearing the double-front work dungarees before OSHA regulations forced them to wear flame-resistant clothing. if Carhartt would come out with a double-front dungaree many of those workers would be wearing them. if the company isn’t providing the worker with comfortable clothing to meet the requirement this pant would be the pant of choice by many of the workers.

In a previous article I stated that Carhartt added a jacket to their lineup this spring that has a Lanyard Access Jacket for those workers who need the ability to attach to a safety harness. this upgrade to the jacket most likely came from guys who wear the product suggesting that they incorporate it. what could Carhartt do to their jackets to reach out to their customers and increase their comfort on the jobsite? there are two areas we believe Carhartt could include to do so. High visibility flame-resistant would allow the workers who need to be wearing both to shed that nagging high-visibility vest that could get caught up on something if it’s too loose. And then would waterproof flame-resistant be the next step? One can only wonder and that’s why we’ll leave the innovation up to Carhartt. Although flame-resistant has come a long ways as you can see, you never know what they have up their sleeve, whether it’s a short or long one.

Glam Up Your Boyfriend Blazer With Fashion Jewelry

Glam Up Your Boyfriend Blazer With Fashion Jewelry

The boyfriend blazer is fun to wear, especially with a nice pair of jeans and a comfortable white tee. Based on your body type, here are some ideas on how you can glam up this outfit with some great fashion jewelry.

Tall:

If you are tall, you are going to want to pair your outfit with some funky jewelry. Think bright, bold, but complementing colors, a string of bubble sized beads or chunky stones for a necklace. For earrings, think large colorful studs or acrylic hoops to complement the colors in your necklace. Now, roll up the sleeves and adorn your arms with fabulous, fun bangles. Be sure to use several of them in the same color palate as the earrings and necklace.

Short & Petite:

For the petite woman, accessorizing the boyfriend blazer is a bit different. to make your body appear longer, you should use long lines. Buy a linked chain that goes past your bust, but stops at least an inch and a half above the top of the waist of your pants. anything that touches or goes past the waist will make you look more petite. Wear chandelier or hoop earrings that are long, but not so long that they brush against your shoulders. Don’t roll up your sleeves; instead leave them long – so you can skip the bangles if you like. this gives you a longer silhouette, hence makes you look a bit taller.

Plus Size / Curvy:

Like petite women, curvy women should accessorize to look taller as well, which will make you look slimmer. instead of a chain that goes over the bust, you’re going to want a chain that is medium width, with a pendant that is not too large or too small. it shouldn’t be right up against your neck, and should stop short of spilling over your bust.

Your earrings should be slim metallic or acrylic hoops or anything with a long straight line that ends just below your chin. again do not roll up your sleeves, this will break the long lines you are working to create.

We’ve only outlined three of the common body types to give you an idea of the different ways you can use fashion accessories. but whatever your body type, wear what makes you feel comfortable. With all their colors and varying sizes, fashion accessories help you express yourself – use them to look and feel good about yourself.
